2 NY Men Tried To Scam $5,000 From Bank In Greenwich, Cops Say

The incident occurred on Greenwich Avenue last week.

GREENWICH, CT — Two Bronx, NY men were arrested on a host of larceny, identity theft and forgery charges by Greenwich police last week after they allegedly tried to scam a Chase Bank on Greenwich Avenue out of $5,000, according to authorities.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on April 4, when bank staff alerted police that someone, was attempting to make a fraudulent withdrawal.

Officers discovered the suspect, William Ayala, 50, in the lobby of the bank. In his possession was a fake New York driver's license, "personal identifying information of another person whom he was impersonating," and a fraudulent credit card.

Additionally, Ayala had a Samsung Galaxy cell phone in his possession that police said he had obtained fraudulently the same day from a T-Mobile store in Stamford.

Greenwich officers also discovered that Ayala had an accomplice who dropped him off at the bank, and found him, Michael A. Smith, 35, a short distance away. Smith had two fraudulent IDs in his possession and three fake credit cards, according to police.

The two were taken into custody and released after posting bond on bail of $25,000 each, and they are scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on April 19.
