2013 Good Year for Greenwich’s Urban Forest: 275 trees of all varieties planted by the Greenwich Tree Conservancy.
Now beginning its eighth year since its founding as a non-profit environmental organization focusing on the planting, protection and maintenance of trees, the Conservancy has been responsible for the planting of over 1,000 trees in the past seven years on public lands . The Conservancy works closely with the Town Tree Warden, Bruce Spaman, and his department, and also partners with other community organizations including the Greenwich Land Trust, the Garden Education Center, the Bruce Museum, and Greenwich Green and Clean. The Conservancy has sponsored many lectures and field trips as a way of educating the public about the essential value of trees , which is sometimes forgotten.
Our town was fortunate in 2013 not to have had any major storms that felled trees, but so many trees were lost in Greenwich during the Irene and Sandy storms, that we still need to make up for those as well as add to the greening of our town. All tree planting is done following the concept of “Right Tree, Right Place”, which means that the eventual height of a tree needs to be taken into account if the site is close to power lines or structures.
