It’s important to identify and avoid any potential roadblocks between you and a quality, beautiful bathroom.

What Should You Avoid When Remodeling Your Bathroom?

1. Rushing – This might sound obvious, but it is a very common problem that can have disastrous consequences. After all, the idea of a remodel is fun, so it’s natural to want to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the problem with this is that poor decisions can be made and opportunities are often missed.

2. Picking a remodeling professional out of a hat – Not all builders operate at the same level, and not all have your best interests in mind. The key is to spend time researching your prospective professional, viewing their work, reading reviews, and actually talking with them about your goals. Are they engaged, interested, and knowledgeable?

3. Choosing cheap materials – There is absolutely nothing wrong with remodeling on a budget! The problems can arise, however, if you choose only the cheapest products. They may look fantastic at a distance (or online!), but in the long run it will certainly save you money to make the initial investment in quality. A higher sticker price is far less expensive than repeated repairs and replacements down the road.

4. Short-sighted – A quality bathroom remodel is a long-term investment. Think ahead to what your needs might be down the road. Are you going to have a growing family? Will extra storage space be necessary? Can you get by with just a walk-in shower, or will a tub be needed?

5. Forgetting about lighting – Few things are more pleasant than natural light. Planning ahead for a window or skylight can be a good idea, or at the very least talk with your remodeler about how to ensure adequate lighting.

6. Location issues – With convenience in mind, many homeowners initially like the idea of having a bathroom right off of a main living space. In reality, however, a more secluded location is often better.
