Man Tried To Blow Up Home During Residential Burglary, Greenwich Police Say

A man is accused of causing a gas leak and placing a toaster oven in a microwave during a residential burglary, according to police.

GREENWICH, CT — A man is accused of trying to blow up a home with an intentional gas leak during a residential burglary in Greenwich, according to police.

Jeffrey Caviola, 43, was arrested on Tuesday on a warrant that charged him with criminal attempt to commit third-degree arson; illegal manufacturing of a bomb; first-degree burglary; third-degree burglary; two counts of first-degree criminal mischief; and second-degree criminal mischief.

On April 4 at approximately 7:52 a.m., Greenwich police responded to a report of a gas leak in the Pemberwick Road area of town.

Responding officers determined that the incident was associated with a residential burglary, police said.

An investigation found there was extensive damage done to the home, police said, noting the suspect turned on the natural gas supply from the stove and forcibly removed the oven door, allowing gas to flow freely into the residence.

Additionally, a toaster was placed inside a microwave, which was then activated, police said.

"This combination of actions created the potential for a spark that could have ignited the accumulated natural gas and resulted in a significant explosion," police said.

Further investigation revealed the same suspect was also involved in a commercial burglary on the Post Road in Greenwich, police added. Damage to office space there exceeded $1,500 and included destruction to interior fixtures.

Detectives identified Caviola as the suspect and secured an arrest warrant.

Police advised residents to report suspicious activity any time to 203-622-8004. To make a confidential tip about criminal activity, contact TIPS@greenwichct.gov or 203-622-3333.
