GREENWICH, CT — A driver was killed, and a passenger suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Greenwich early Sunday morning, according to police.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:09 a.m. on West Ritch Avenue adjacent to the Byram Shore tennis courts.
Police said an officer who was conducting radar enforcement on Delavan Avenue saw a Lexus LS400 traveling eastbound at an estimated speed of 50 mph in a posted 25-mph zone, police said in an announcement.
The officer then saw the vehicle go through a red light at the intersection of Delavan Avenue and Frontage Road, police said.
After heading the same direction to conduct a motor vehicle stop, the officer soon found the vehicle had crashed and sustained significant damage from a roadside utility pole, police said.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead, police said, noting more police, fire and EMS units responded to the scene. A front-seat passenger was taken to a local area hospital with serious injuries.
The crash closed West Ritch Avenue between Byram Shore Road and the I-95 northbound exit 2 on-ramp due to utility repairs.
The Greenwich Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.
Anyone with information related to the collision is asked to contact Sgt. JD Smith at 203-622-8015 or James.Smith@greenwichct.gov.
