Greenwich Police Warn Residents Of New Email Scam

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich police are warning residents about a scam email that's circulating that falsely appears to come from a member of the department.

Police said the email claims the recipient owes money or has an outstanding invoice.

"These messages may appear convincing, using names, titles, or contact information associated with legitimate agencies in an attempt to pressure recipients into making immediate payments or clicking suspicious links," police said in an announcement. "Please be advised: the Greenwich Police Department will NEVER contact individuals via email, text message, or phone call demanding payment or requesting immediate financial transactions."

Residents are urged to use caution if they receive unsolicited messages claiming to be from law enforcement or other government agencies requesting money.

Police noted that common red flags include:

• Demands for immediate payment
• Requests to click a payment link
• Threats of legal action or penalties if payment is not made immediately
• Suspicious sender email addresses or contact information that does not match official sources
• Poor grammar, unusual formatting, or unexpected invoices

Residents should not click any links or open attachments, and should not send money or provide personal information. Suspicious messages should be deleted, and residents should report the scam to police if they are unsure of its legitimacy.

"Scammers frequently impersonate trusted organizations to create urgency and confusion," police added. "The Greenwich Police Department encourages the public to remain vigilant and verify any suspicious communications through official channels."
