Temporary Road Closure Approved In Area Of Central Middle School

The closure is necessary so crews can shift sewer piping and manholes out into the road. Here's when the work is expected to start.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Board of Selectmen on Thursday approved a temporary road closure for Central Middle School construction sanitary work at Indian Rock Lane and Stanwich Road.

The work is expected to start at the beginning of July and go through mid-August, according to Turner Construction Site Superintendent Peter Alfano, who noted the six to eight-week duration is on the conservative side.

Road closures will begin west of Ponderosa Drive, and continue towards Stanwich Road, and end at the intersection of Stanwich Road and Indian Rock Lane.

Cars will be detoured around the CMS campus via Orchard Street and Stanwich Road. Alfano noted driveways to residences will remain open, and access to Greenwich Baptist Church will also be maintained.

Work hours are expected to be from 7 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and potentially on Saturdays. The roadway will reopen at the end of each work day.

CMS Building Committee Chair Jose Rossetti told the selectmen earlier this month that the Greenwich Department of Public Works encouraged the moving of utilities off the CMS site and into the road.

"That area where the existing sewer lines are is going to be where the new ballfields are going to be, so that's the reason we're going to be shifting that sewer piping and manholes out into the road for future maintenance for the Town of Greenwich," Alfano reiterated Thursday.

First Selectman Fred Camillo requested periodic updates on the planned work to address any issues that may arise.

The new 125,000-square-foot building is being constructed just north of the current school.

The existing school will continue to operate until the new structure is complete and has received a final certificate of occupancy.

If all goes according to plan, the new $112 million CMS could open before the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
