Greenwich Council Election Results 2026: Labour Holds On Despite Major Green Surge

In the 2026 Greenwich Council elections, Labour successfully retained control of the borough but suffered significant losses

In the 2026 local elections, Greenwich once again proved its long-standing loyalty to Labour. The borough, a traditional Labour stronghold since 1971, has delivered another majority for the party. However, this victory comes with a noticeable dent, as the Green Party made impressive gains and has now become the main opposition.

Labour retained control of Greenwich Council but lost 12 seats in the process. Despite the setback, the party secured enough seats to form a majority administration until 2030. Council Leader Anthony Okereke expressed a mix of emotions after the results. He said he felt “privileged” to continue serving residents, particularly in his Woolwich Common ward, but also admitted feeling “bruised” by the losses.

The big story of the night was the remarkable rise of the Green Party. From just two seats previously, the Greens increased their representation to 13 councillors. This makes them the largest opposition group on the council. Green councillors, including Tamasin Rhymes and Stacy Smith, celebrated the outcome and promised to focus on protecting local services, improving accountability, and addressing environmental concerns. They have positioned themselves as a fresh voice that will challenge the ruling party on key local issues.

The Conservatives, meanwhile, managed to increase their numbers slightly. They now hold six seats, doubling their presence from the last election four years ago. Conservative Leader Matt Hartley described the result as a positive step, saying residents in the southern parts of the borough continue to trust the party.

In a surprising development, Reform UK also made its mark by winning one seat in Eltham Page with candidate Paul Banks. This shows how voter preferences in South East London are becoming more fragmented.

What Does This Mean for Greenwich?

Greenwich residents appear to have sent a clear but mixed message. While many still trust Labour to run the borough, a significant portion of voters wanted change. The strong performance by the Greens suggests growing concern over issues like the environment, housing, local services, and greater transparency in council decisions.

Labour now faces the challenge of governing with a reduced majority while dealing with a much stronger opposition. Leader Anthony Okereke has promised to focus on delivering real improvements for residents and demonstrating the value of Labour’s work in people’s daily lives.

For the Greens, the road ahead involves turning their increased numbers into meaningful influence. They have already spoken about pushing for better scrutiny of council decisions and giving residents a stronger voice.

This election reflects a wider trend seen in parts of London, where traditional party loyalties are shifting and smaller parties are gaining ground on specific issues. Yet, Greenwich has once again shown its deep-rooted preference for Labour, even if the party had to work harder this time to keep control.

As the new council term begins, all eyes will be on how Labour handles its slightly weaker position and whether the Greens can effectively hold them accountable. Local residents will ultimately judge the outcome based on improvements in everyday issues such as housing, transport, parks, and community services.

Overall, while Labour remains in charge, the 2026 Greenwich election results mark a clear shift in the borough’s political landscape. The next four years promise more lively debates and stronger opposition at the council level.
