2 Greenwich Board Of Education Members Resign, Replacements Sought

GREENWICH, CT — Two Greenwich Board of Education members have resigned, and now the school district is seeking replacements to fill the vacancies.

Board Chair Michael-Joseph Mercanti-Anthony, a Republican, alerted the board late last week that he would be resigning, according to a note that was sent to families and staff on Monday by Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones.

Shortly after Mercanti-Anthony's notice, fellow Republican and board member Wendy Vizzo Walsh announced she would be resigning, too. Both resignations are effective Aug. 26.

It was not immediately clear why Mercanti-Anthony and Walsh decided to resign now.

The Greenwich Board of Education has been embroiled in legal matters with the town and First Selectman Fred Camillo since 2024.

Requests for comment to both members on Monday were not answered by the time of publication.

Mercanti-Anthony has been a member of the board since 2021, and he was elected chair in 2025. After his four-year term was up, he was endorsed for the two-year term that remained after Republican Karen Kowalski resigned.

Along with his chairmanship, Mercanti-Anthony served as chair of the BOE Policy Committee and was a member of the Old Greenwich Building Committee and a liaison to the Greenwich Education Association.

Walsh has been a school board member since 2023. She has been a member of the Curriculum Committee, served on the Julian Curtiss Building Committee, and was a liaison to Parks and Recreation.

"We thank them for all that they have done for Greenwich Public Schools," Jones said in her correspondence.

GPS is now seeking two residents who are registered with the Republican Party to take the vacant seats and complete the terms up until the November 2027 municipal election.

"This is a great opportunity to impact our schools in your town," Jones added." Although these are volunteer positions, the time commitment is expected to be at a high level due to the tremendous amount of progress GPS is experiencing (building committees, budget meetings, committees, and regularly scheduled meetings)."

Those interested in serving on the board must submit résumés and letters of interest to GPS Board Clerk Michael Antonaccio at michael_antonaccio@greenwich.k12.ct.us.

Potential replacements should indicate their interest as soon as possible, but no later than Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Jones said a vote of the remaining members of the BOE to decide the new board members will occur as soon as possible after Aug. 26.
