Back to School Is a Good Time to Review Your Family’s Insurance

Back to school season brings plenty of changes for local families. Children are starting new schools, college students are leaving home, and some teenagers are getting their licenses and driving on their own for the first time.

With these changes, August and September are also good times to review your auto and life insurance.

If your child is attending college more than 100 miles from home and will not have a car with them, you may be eligible for a resident student discount on your auto insurance. Your child can usually remain on the family policy so they are still covered when they come home and drive during holidays, school breaks, and the summer.

Parents should let their insurance agent know when a student moves away to college. The company may request proof of enrollment and confirmation that the student does not have a vehicle at school.

We have also been seeing competitive Allstate rates for many families with young drivers. Adding a teenager to an auto policy can be expensive, but rates can vary significantly from one insurance company to another. It is worth comparing prices instead of assuming your current company will be the best option.

Families may also qualify for savings based on good grades, driver education, safe driving habits, multiple vehicles, and other available discounts.

Many Greenwich families have their homes insured through specialty companies that focus on higher value properties. You do not always have to move your home insurance in order to get a better auto rate. In some cases, we can insure the vehicles with Allstate while the home remains with the existing carrier.

This is also a good time for parents to review their life insurance. As children get older, family expenses, income, mortgages, college plans, and other financial responsibilities can change. A policy purchased several years ago may no longer provide enough protection.

Life insurance does not have to be complicated or expensive. A simple review can help determine whether your current coverage would be enough to replace income, pay off major debts, and help your family maintain financial stability if something unexpected happened.
