Fire At School Caused 'Significant' Damage To Classroom: Greenwich FD

GREENWICH, CT — A fire broke out at Greenwich Catholic School over the weekend, causing "significant" damage to a classroom, according to the Greenwich Fire Department.

On Sept. 12 at approximately 10:05 p.m., Greenwich firefighters responded to an alarm at the school located at 471 North St.

While investigating, firefighters found smoke and located a fire in one of the classrooms.

Crews stretched several hoselines into the building, and the fire was declared under control in approximately 15 minutes, the GFD said. Around 30 firefighters responded to the scene.

"The quick and coordinated work of the crews helped prevent additional damage to the school, although one classroom did sustain significant damage," the GFD said.

There were no injuries to firefighters reported, and no one was inside the school at the time of the call.

The GFD reminded residents about the importance of functioning fire alarm systems.

"In this case, the alarm alerted firefighters to the fire and allowed them to quickly locate and extinguish it," the GFD said.

The incident is under investigation by the Greenwich Fire Marshal's Office. It was not immediately clear how the fire would impact school on Monday.
