GREENWICH, CT — Veterans Day is officially on Nov. 11, but residents can honor those who have served beginning this weekend at the annual Cos Cob VFW Post 10112 ceremony.
The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m., in the Cos Cob Veterans Memorial Park across from the Greenwich Historical Society on Strickland Road.
"This is a wonderful ceremony and it always brings the community together to thank our veterans and honor them and their service," First Selectman Fred Camillo said in his weekly newsletter to the community on Friday. "Please come and join us for this event and thank the veterans who have given so much to us to protect the freedoms we enjoy."
Greenwich will also honor veterans during the annual march down Greenwich Avenue on Nov. 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The American Legion Post 29 will then hold a ceremony near the World War I monument in front of Restoration Hardware.
Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always officially observed on Nov. 11 to reflect the signing of the armistice ending World War I at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
The observance was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.
