
Dr. Tarique Perera, CEO, Contemporary Care of Connecticut was featured on the Doctor Oz show on Wednesday March 14th, 2012 to discuss and demonstrate the use of the cutting edge treatment TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy for treatment resistant depression.
TMS therapy was FDA approved in 2008 and is approved by the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Perera founded Contemporary Care of Connecticut, where his team has been practicing TMS treatment since October, 2010. Since then his TMS practice has become one of the busiest in the country, and has expanded practice to locations in Darien, CT and White Plains, NY.

Dr. Perera's team has had excellent success treating patients with depression that is resistant to medication or patients that have difficulty taking antidepressants. his team has also successfully treated depressed patients with comorbid anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, eating disorders, Parkinsons Disorder, chronic pain and fibromyalgia.
Dr. Perera is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and Assistant Professor at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. In addition to his professorship, he serves as the Director of Preclinical studies in the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI). Dr. Perera has won several prestigious awards for his work and is currently involved in several studies aimed at discovering the neurobiological target of antidepressants. Specifically, his research focuses on neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons) in the hippocampus, a brain region that is important for emotional processing, during antidepressant treatment.

Dr. Perera began his research career in the Division of Biological Psychiatry at the NYSPI where the early trials of TMS were conducted. Dr. Perera predicted the value of its therapeutic potential 10-years ago in a publication in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology in 2000 (volume 3, pages 59-273). He is considered an expert psychopharmacologist and has been rated one of the Best Doctors in America for the past 7 years. Dr. Perera gives lectures for other psychiatrists and primary care physicians on the use of medications for mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorders, and the use of TMS therapy for depression. Dr. Perera lectures in a week-long training program at Columbia University that sets the Standards of Practice for both ECT and TMS practice worldwide. In addition, he trains psychiatry residents in psychopharmacology at Columbia University.
