Vacant Greenwich Funeral Home Could Become Retail Space: P&Z Docs
More retail space could be added to Greenwich Avenue, according to documents submitted to the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Department.
GREENWICH, CT — More retail space could be added to Greenwich Avenue, according to recent documents submitted to the town's planning and zoning department.
A change of use has been proposed for the space formerly occupied by Fred D. Knapp Funeral Home, the longtime family-run business at 267 Greenwich Ave., which moved to Hamilton Avenue in June 2023.
The applicant, listed as 267 Greenwch Avenue Associates LLC, is looking to renovate the interior of the building to utilize the space for retail purposes, attorney Thomas J. Heagney said in submitted documents. The building was constructed in 1906.

The funeral home had operated on the first floor and basement, and there is an office with two apartments on the third floor, Heagney said.
"As part of this renovation, the facade will be restored to its original condition to facilitate retail use. The retail space will be able to be divided into two stores, one being accessed from the rear parking lot area and one from Greenwich Avenue," Heagney said. "Site plan approval is requested to convert the funeral parlor non-conforming use to retail which is conforming in the zone."

There would be 6,477 square feet of usable floor area for retail, the submitted documents note. The space has been available to lease since last summer.
The application has not yet been scheduled to go before the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission.
