GREENWICH, CT — After 34 years in business, Express Pizza & Greco’s Bella Cucina in the Chickahominy neighborhood of Greenwich is closing its doors.

A banner on the eatery's website announced the closing.

"We did our best to support the community during the pandemic but with the addition of rising food costs, and staffing challenges, we aren’t able to recover," the announcement said. "We would like to thank the entire Greenwich community for their support and patronage throughout the years. The relationships that we have built and the families that we have gotten to know have created lasting memories and for that, we thank you!"

But residents have launched a GoFundMe to help support owner Frank Greco and his family. Since the campaign launched on June 6, 108 donors have raised over $11,000 out of a $100,000 goal.

"This was not a major restaurant chain or franchise. It was a labor of love that endured for over three decades, an example of the small, family owned businesses the have been pillars of communities across America," the description of the fundraiser said. "Frank was welcoming, first-name basis place where patrons went to enjoy delicious food and a family atmosphere. So often after school, the kids would say 'let’s grab a slice and say hi to Frank.' It was 'Cheers' without the alcohol."

According to the description, Frank financed the business on Hamilton Avenue out of his own pocket. A dedicated staff, along with his wife, children and friends helped with taking orders and even making deliveries.

Express Pizza gave back to the community. Soon after the pandemic hit, Greco regularly sent pizzas to Greenwich Hospital to support health care workers.

Hospital President Diane Kelly told Patch in an emailed statement she was upset to learn the business is closing.

"I’m sad to hear that Bella Cucina-Express Pizza is closing its doors. Greenwich Hospital will never forget all they did to help our doctors, nurses and staff get through the worst of the pandemic," Kelly said. "Our staff appreciated not only the delicious food, but knowing that people in the community were thinking of them."

Because of the lingering effects of the pandemic, and with offices closed and people working from home more consistently, plus inflation, business suffered, the GoFundMe description said.

"The lunchtime business has evaporated. Express Pizza has incurred debts beyond the scope of what can be repaid to keep its doors open," the description continued.

"This was a great business started and managed by a great man. It was forced to close through no fault of its owner. He deserves our help."

Several donors posted comments on the GoFundMe page wishing the Greco family luck. Many commented about how they're going to miss the delicious menu offerings.

Express Pizza & Greco’s Bella Cucina featured a wide range of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, Italian dishes, pasta and of course, pizza.

"Best eggplant Parmesan in town! I really hope you guys remain open. Best of luck!" said a donor.

"Like the saying goes all good things come to an end someday. It’s not over for you and your family. Just a bump in the road you will get over," said another.
