Cos Cob Library Seeks New Patio, Enlarged Community Room

The library is looking to upgrade its facility, according to documents filed with the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission.

GREENWICH, CT — The Cos Cob Library is seeking to expand its community room and add a storage building, patio and trellis, according to documents submitted to planning & zoning last month.

"The single-story facility is in need of upgrades and a more appropriately sized community room," said Thomas J. Heagney, attorney for the applicant, in documents filed with the town. "The trellis and patio will provide outdoor gathering space and the shed will provide for much-needed storage."

The community room would be expanded by approximately 300 square feet over existing asphalt, Heagney said.

"By reconfiguring the parking lot and eliminating one of the driveways, the 14 parking spaces currently existing can be maintained and one additional parking space can be added to the municipal lot adjacent to the library property," Heagney noted.

While the trellis, patio and shed would be in the rear of the library, they are technically in the front yard on the lot, Heagney said. A front yard setback variance has been requested from the Zoning Board of Appeals.

A special permit, in addition to site plan approval, is being requested since the library is non-residential use in the residential zone.

The proposal has not yet been scheduled to go before the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission.
