Creating for the Community -- Local Students Make Bowls for Greenwich's Neighbor to Neighbor's 40th Anniversary
Local students give back to the community.
Students from several local schools including Greenwich Country Day, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Cloonan Middle School, and Westhill High School, as well as Lakeside Pottery, made and donated bowls to Greenwich’s food pantry Neighbor to Neighbor.
The bowls will be displayed at Neighbor to Neighbor’s 40th anniversary benefit “Filling Bowls for 40 years” on April 24 at the Milbrook Club in Greenwich. [The event is sold out.]
“Neighbor to Neighbor is a really cool organization and I am so glad I get to be a part of it,” said Catherine, a Central Middle School student, of the unique art project she and fellow students at Central Middle School recently completed.

“It is wonderful to have an activity in which all the students can participate in giving back to the community. Some of our students have so much, but at the same time some of our students need the services of Neighbor to Neighbor,” said Barbara Gotch, Central Middle School’s art teacher.
Neighbor to Neighbor Executive Director Nancy Coughlin visited Central Middle School students and her message resonated with students.

Kyle said, “Neighbor to Neighbor helps people in our town by donating clothes and food. So I wanted to make a bowl that would look really nice.” “I learned a lot of people don’t have stuff so we should make things and give to those who cannot make things for themselves,” said another student named Stephanie. Her bowl is covered with geometric designs of squares and triangles. “I tried for a hexagon but that was too difficult!”
Neighbor to Neighbor founder Jane Fleming and longtime volunteer Betty Sheridan will be honored at the dinner that also will feature live and silent auctions. All funds raised at the event will support the organization’s programs of providing nutritious food and gently used clothing and household items to low-income area residents.
“The colorful display of student-created bowls at Neighbor to Neighbor’s 40th celebration will remind attendees how lucky we are our bowls are filled,” Coughlin said.
