Daisy Girl Scouts Plant Flowers At Old Greenwich School

GREENWICH, CT — On May 15 the members of the Daisy Girl Scout Troop 50147 had a “growing experience at the Secret Garden at Old Greenwich School.

They and their leaders, Michelle Horgan and Julie Hammer, along with some parents planted marigolds, impatiens and petunias that they had purchased with money earned through their cookie sales. The Garden Club of Old Greenwich also participated with a gift of nasturtium seeds and Stuttgart canna roots and were on hand to provide assistance.

The garden project is ongoing, since the girls are responsible for watering in the coming weeks and gives them an opportunity to see the progress of their work. In addition, the girls learned about composting from Britta Calkosz from Waste Free Greenwich. For some of the girls this was the most fun because they loved the worms they found in the compost.

This activity will go towards the girls’ "Welcome to the Flower Garden" badge and introduces them to community service.
