Decking the Halls [VIDEO]

A public venue for student artistic creativity ... at Town Hall.

The hallways of have been the backdrop for many stories over the years. And now one corridor is the backdrop of the stories that inspired the artwork of students.

GHS art teacher Julie Nixon, who's the art program associate, and her teacher colleague Lisa Nobile, recently installed a collection of the student's work on exhibit in the first floor hallway outside the town clerk and tax collector offices. The colorful array is on view until the end of October, according to Nixon.

A second installment of students' works will be mounted in December, she said.

The dozen or so works were created by sophomores, juniors and seniors in a variety of medium ranging from the traditional painting, to computer-generated art. The students worked with a variety of themes from global issues including the environment to personal issues and self-portraits.

Nixon said both state Rep. Fred Camillo and First Selectman Peter Tesei were instrumental in allowing the exhibition.

"Over the past few years, Ms. Nixon has tirelessly promoted the Arts, the Arts Dept at GHS that she chairs, and the view that the Arts are a critical component in developing and expanding the minds of our students," Camillo told Greenwich Patch. "I personally have become a supporter of this concept as well as the GHS Arts Department due to her advocacy. The display at Town Hall is a nice way to further this recognition."

Tesei arranged for the design and installation of picture hanging rails along the hallway.

At the other end of the first-floor corridor, outside the First Selectman's office, is a continuing display of art created by Greenwich Senior Center members who meet weekly for art workshops.
