Driver Faces DUI Charge After Nearly Hitting Greenwich Police Officers

The officers were directing traffic at the scene of a medical emergency.

A driver is facing a driving under the influence charge after he nearly struck two Greenwich Police officers directing traffic at the scene of medical emergency.

It was about 11:30 p.m. June 16 when four Greenwich Police units and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service were on East Putnam Avenue near Greenwich Avenue to assist a motorist suffering a diabetic emergency, according to a Greenwich Police report.

Two officers had stepped into the roadway to direct traffic so that the motorist’s car could be moved into a parking space and that’s when police say another driver “accelerated at a high rate of speed towards the scene abruptly stopping just before the officers’ location,” according to the police report.

Garcia, who reportedly failed field sobriety tests, was charged with driving under the influence and unsafe movement. He was released after posting $220 bond and is scheduled to appear June 30 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
