Drowning Prevention Roundtable Discussion In Greenwich May 23

The event will help to develop a Greenwich Drowning Prevention Action Plan.

From ZAC: With the start of pool and beach season days away, swim safety advocates, elected officials, public policy and health experts, school officials, youth sports coaches, as well as leaders of community groups, including those from faith-based, parent, advocacy and recreation-related organizations, will discuss and develop a goal-oriented, time-bound community action plan to improve water safety in Fairfield County and prevent drowning. The Fairfield County Roundtable is sponsored by The ZAC Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greenwich.

Participants include Karen Cohn, Co-Founder of The ZAC Foundation, Megan Ferraro, Executive Director of The ZAC Foundation, Jim Heavey, Greenwich Police Chief; Joe Scilliano, Greenwich Parks & Recreation Director; Ian MacMillan, Harbormaster; Gaby Ratner, Executive Director, Community Centers Inc. of Greenwich; Byram Archibald, Neighborhood Center Director, David Rabin, President and CEO of Greenwich United Way; Jenna Masone, E.D. Principal, Wolfpit Elementary; Kim Leonard, Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation;Doreen Miner, Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation; Dr. Vidya Anegundi, Next Generation Pediatrics; Dr. Erik Cohen, Next Generation Pediatrics; Bobby Walker, Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich; Bob Deangelo, YMCA of Greenwich; and representatives from the American Red Cross, Greenwich Health Department; First Baptist Church of Greenwich.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14, according to the CDC. There were 3,709 deaths due to unintentional drowning in the United States in 2017, the most recent data available.In 2017, there were 17 deaths due to unintentional drowning in Connecticut.
