Fire Breaks Out At Commercial Garage In Greenwich: GFD

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday, the Greenwich Fire Department said.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich firefighters battled a blaze in Byram at a commercial garage at 86 N. Water St. early Tuesday morning, according to GFD Chief Joe McHugh.

The business associated with the address is Westmore Fuel.

Units responded to the garage shortly after 4 a.m., McHugh said, and found the structure engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported, and it took about an hour-and-a-half to get the flames under control, McHugh added.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also responded and is looking at the nearby Byram River for any toxins as a result of the fire, McHugh said. Booms were placed in the water to prevent any runoff of hazardous material from the fire.

OVerall, all career fire engines responded to the fire, and there were about 15 volunteer units. Sound Beach Engine 5 covered the town while the call was ongoing.

McHugh said the cause of the fire is unknown at the moment and under investigation.
