For Mentoring Fellow Students, Frank Riccio Receives Citizenship Award

Throughout the school year Beacon student and Greenwich resident Frank Riccio, has served as a peer mentor for two students who attend Beacon’s sister school, Pinnacle.

His commitment has been recognized by Abilis, and they have awarded him The Peter Bloomer Citizenship Award. The Peter Bloomer Citizenship Award, Middle School Level, is presented to a graduating student who demonstrates an outstanding level of sensitivity toward people with disabilities through leadership, involvement and participation in activities that benefit citizens with disabilities. Frank is the only middle school student receiving the award this year.

Part of a Beacon education includes a commitment to community service. Students are encouraged to give back to their community through volunteer work and involvement in community projects. Frank has taken this to heart and takes time during his lunch and study hall periods to mentor younger students in fifth and seventh grade who attend Pinnacle, the Greenwich Education Group School for students who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disability or ADHD.

Frank patiently tutors them on homework assignments, as well as socializing with his mentees outside of their assigned time together, whether it is in the hallway or in physical education class.  In the words of one of the boys, “Our time together is special.”
