Having a child with food allergies, I am fortunate to live in a school district that has become more proactive about being prepared for an anaphylactic reaction and even an an asthma attack. At the end of school year when I pick up my son's medications from the school nurse, I receive the forms that they will need for need for the next school year. They seem pretty standard and easy enough to understand after all these years. However, I truly appreciate that both FARE and AllerMates, have created documents which are so much more self-explanatory even for those who are unfamiliar with food allergic reactions.
It can be overwhelming to start school even without any medical condition. There is always additional paperwork and people to talk with every year to make certain that our children with food allergies stay safe and healthy.
Make sure to have an allergy action plan or an emergency action plan filed in both the nurse's office as well as with your child's teacher or counselor. The more people that you involve in the conversation, the better peace of mind for you and your child.
