GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich community is rallying to help The Makerie Cafe in Cos Cob after a car crashed through the storefront on Labor Day.

According to Greenwich Lt. Patrick Smyth, a woman in the parking lot at 77 Valley Road thought she was pressing on her car's brakes, but she pressed on the gas pedal instead which caused the car to crash into the front of the store.

There were no injuries, Smyth said. The business was closed for the holiday.

"We are thankful that the store was closed and no one was physically hurt…just our hearts," the owners wrote in a post on Facebook. "I want to express my immense gratitude to my friends and family who immediately came to help me. I truly don’t have the words to express how overwhelmed I am with your kindness. This deli means everything to me and so do all of you. I am determined to get back up and running so we can serve you all again soon."

A GoFundMe fundraiser was started to help The Makerie Cafe rebuild.

"Only opening about a year ago, The Makerie has made a name for itself for delicious sandwiches and homemade foods. Affordable prices, friendly staff, and space to stay and eat while catching up with friends in an unrushed atmosphere," said the fundraiser's organizer, Tammie Freccia. "It's now time for Greenwich to help this Greenwich native family. While insurance will of course cover expenses (fingers crossed)... there will still be uncovered expenses and day-to-day costs while everything gets sorted out."

Freccia said the crash caused "much damage."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $5,125 out of a $10,000 goal.
