GREENWICH, CT — The 33-year-old cold case of a deceased baby found in a dumpster in downtown Greenwich is receiving renewed scrutiny by the Greenwich Police Department.

Referred to by investigators as "Baby John," the male infant was found in an apartment building dumpster at the Town Hall Annex Apartments on Havemeyer Place on May 16, 1986, near the side entrance on Mason Street.

"The medical examiner determined that Baby John was killed shortly after being born," stated Greenwich Police Lt. John Slusarz Monday. While Greenwich police are remaining tight-lipped about many of the details about the case - for fear of giving out too many clues that could impede the investigation - some additional information has emerged.

"We investigated some possible suspects over the years but they have all be excluded," Slusarz told Patch Monday. "It's one of those cases that we keep coming back to as new technology comes on the scene, such as improvements in DNA testing."

The department is publicly discussing the case again in the hopes of jogging someone's memory about the case.

"Someone may remember the smallest amount of information that could help us solve this case," Slusarz said. "Maybe they'll remember a friend or relative who was pregnant at the time."

The infant was found by sanitation workers on the morning of May 16, 1986, wrote the Greenwich Time in a 2012 retrospective on the case. He had been wrapped in a towel and put inside a plastic bag, his umbilical cord and placenta still present.

"There's a mother and a father to this child out there, and possibly others who have knowledge about the case, and that's the audience we want to reach," said Slusarz.

A $20,000 reward is being offered by the state for information "that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible" for Baby John's death.

Additionally, anyone with any information about the case - and/or the circumstances surrounding it - is urged to contact the Greenwich Police Department locally at 203-622-3333 or toll free at 800-372-1176.
