Grand Marshal Announced For 2025 Greenwich St. Patrick's Day Parade

The 49th Greenwich St. Patrick's Day parade is scheduled for March 23 at 2 p.m.

GREENWICH, CT — Father Richard Murphy, the current Greenwich police chaplain, will be the grand marshal for the 49th annual Greenwich St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Murphy will be installed as the grand marshal on March 8 by the Greenwich Hibernian Association at its annual St. Patrick's dinner dance. The parade is scheduled for March 23 at 2 p.m.

Born and raised in Stamford, Murphy graduated from Stamford High School in 1979 and then worked for Pitney Bowes as a postage meter repairman.

In 1989, he entered the St. John Fischer seminary residence and earned a bachelor's degree at Sacred Heart University. Murphy then went to Major Seminary at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall.

Murphy was ordained as a priest in 1996 at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport by then Bishop Edward Egan. His first assignment was St. Thomas the Apostle in Norwalk, followed by St. Cecilia in Stamford. Murphy was assigned to St. Theresa in Trumbull, served as pastor of Our Lady of Peace in Stratford, and in 2014, he was assigned to St. Michael Parish in Greenwich.

Over the years, Murphy held the position of chaplain of the Trumbull Police Department, Greenwich Police Department where he is currently, and the Greenwich Knights of Columbus.

Murphy's grandfather, Philip Murphy Sr., immigrated from New Ross, Co. Wexford in Ireland, and his grandmother, Margaret Carey, migrated from Kilkenny. The two met in Brooklyn and married, and later moved to Greenwich.

Murphy's parents, Philip Murphy Jr., and Betty (Rossillo) Murphy, also had another son named Philip and three daughters, Elizabeth, Rosemary, and Margaret.
