Greenwich Architect Honored By Home Builders Group

Douglas VanderHorn's Waterfront French Eclectic project was recognized for excellence.

From Douglas VanderHorn Architects: The Home Builders & Remodelers Association (HBRA) of Connecticut honored Douglas VanderHorn, an award-winning, classically-focused architect specializing in residential design, at this year’s annual HOBI Awards program. VanderHorn's Waterfront French Eclectic project won 2 awards, "Best Custom Home 10,000 – 12,000 square feet" and the top prize of the evening, “Custom Home of the Year.”

The HOBIs (Home Building Industry Awards) were announced at a gala on November 15th with approximately 880 attendees celebrating the very best homes in Connecticut. The HOBI awards showcase the best products and services offered by HBRA members in multiple categories, including new home construction, land development, remodeling, commercial construction, sales and marketing, and financing.

The awards also honored the builder of the project, Significant Homes, of New Canaan, CT. The Waterfront French Eclectic home and formal gardens in Southern Fairfield County are concealed from the road by tall evergreens and open towards expansive views of the Long Island Sound. The 10,400-square foot residence is articulated in the French provincial style with a rustic barn form adjoining the water side of the home.

The design features a state-of-the-art kitchen set against a backdrop of heavy timbers, stucco walls, wide plank floors, and a brick backsplash with inset antique cast iron fireback panel. The French manor house style benefits from numerous modern innovations including geothermal heating and cooling, LED lighting and smart home functionality. Formal rooms feature sweeping curved stairways, beautifully detailed millwork, and substantial glazed openings at windows and doors. A spectacular hand-carved limestone fireplace and cathedral timber ceiling distinguishes the formidable Great Room.

VanderHorn has received numerous awards for his work, which is well known throughout Connecticut and New York. Most recently, he was honored by athome Magazine in their Eighth Annual A-List Awards for Fairfield County, in the category of Traditional Architecture Greater than 7,000 Square Feet. In addition to the Athome award recognition, VanderHorn was named a recipient of the Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design Awards, presented by Room & Board Home Furnishings. Cottages & Gardens recognized VanderHorn for his Colonial Revival Pool House in the "Small Spaces" awards category. VanderHorn was also featured on the popular "New England Living" television show with host Parker Kelley, who on episode 9, visited Greenwich to take a look at the many stately and elegant homes along its beautiful coastline.
