GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Board of Education will convene during a special meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday "to discuss and take possible action to suspend or rescind" the school district's current mask policy. The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.

Connecticut lawmakers recently voted to extend Gov. Ned Lamont's executive orders until Feb. 28, which includes the school mask mandate. Beginning March 1, masking policy will be left up to individual school districts.

Greenwich Board of Education Chair Kathleen Stowe told Patch last week the board was waiting for the legislative process to be complete before they took action on masking.

"I cannot speak for my colleagues and we should hear from the relevant public health officials, but I can tell you where I stand. I pushed to get the kids back to school by using all the recommended health measures at the time," Stowe told Patch last week. "Greenwich and our students have responded well to this pandemic, we have achieved high vaccination rates and I think that should give us the flexibility to make masks optional for our students."

Members of the public are encouraged to send their thoughts and opinions to the Greenwich Board of Education at any time at boardofedmembers@greenwich.k12.ct.us.
