GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Country Club, billed as one of the oldest clubs in the United States, is looking to expand its footprint to include a nearby mansion it purchased for $9.6 million in 2021, according to documents submitted to the town's Planning & Zoning Commission late last month.

The club, which is located at 19 Doubling Road, is seeking to merge its 140-acre campus with the single-family home at 25 Doubling Road on eight acres, applicant attorney Bruce Cohen said in a letter filed to P&Z.

Cohen said the home would be "an integral part of the club's private, non-profit club use." He noted that there would be no physical changes or improvements made to the home, and any future development would require approval from the P&Z Commission.

Greenwich Country Club was founded in 1892 as the Fairfield Country Golf Club. It was the fourth country club established in the U.S., and initially settled on 83 acres in Greenwich in 1895, P&Z documents state.

In 1909, the name was change to Greenwich Country Club to reflect expansion of facilities and to include various other sports and social activities.

The club has evolved form a five-hole backyard venue to the sprawling campus it is today. Membership to the club is by invitation only.

The item has not been scheduled yet to go before the Planning & Zoning Commission.
