GREENWICH, CT — Though nearly two days have passed since the polls closed on Election Day, Republican candidate Kimberly Fiorello was finally able to celebrate Thursday afternoon when she declared victory over Democratic candidate Kathleen Stowe in the race for the 149th House District seat.

In an email sent to supporters, Fiorello said she received the final tally of votes from the registrar offices in Greenwich and Stamford, which indicated she received 7,126 votes over Stowe's 6,473 votes. The district includes parts of Greenwich and Stamford.

The result for this race was delayed due to the need to count thousands of absentee ballots in Stamford, a process that took until Thursday morning to complete, according to the Greenwich Time. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Speaking by phone Thursday afternoon, Fiorello said her mood was celebratory despite receiving the news days after Election Day.

"Victory is great any day," Fiorello said. "We had to be patient, but the poll workers [in Stamford] were working diligently to count all the absentee ballots. I'm grateful for the work they did, and I'm thrilled with the results."

In this role, Fiorello will succeed Livvy Floren, who decided not to seek re-election this year after 10 terms in office, leaving the seat up for grabs for the first time in nearly 20 years.

"I feel like I'm always communicating with the public and constituents," Fiorello said, "but I'm almost speechless about the results. I'm just really happy and grateful, and exhausted."

Both Stowe and Fiorello have previously served the town in an official capacity. Fiorello has been a member of the Representative Town Meeting since 2017, while Stowe currently serves as the Board of Education's vice chair.

Stowe could not be reached for comment Thursday. While waiting for absentee ballots to be counted Wednesday morning, Stowe expressed gratitude toward voters in both communities.

"It was wonderful to see such voter engagement,"Stowe said, "both in my race and nationally...I am just so thankful to my wonderful family who stood at the various polling places, friends and volunteers."

In her announcement of the results Thursday, Fiorello thanked husband and children for their help getting her through this election season.

She also thanked her "fellow Republicans who entered the ring" this election season, including Harry Arora, Joe Kelly and Ryan Fazio. Arora declared victory in his race for the 151st District Seat on Wednesday, while Kelly and Fazio both ultimately conceded in their respective races.

"It was an honor to stand with you," Fiorello said.

She also thanked Stowe for the opportunity to "present a choice" to their district.
