Greenwich Girls Capture Another State Open Title
The Cardinals held off some stiff competition from Cheshire to earn their fourth straight Open crown.
NEW HAVEN, CT — For the fourth straight year, and sixth time this decade, the Greenwich High School girls swimming team won the State Open Saturday at the Yale University pool. This time around, however, was not the cakewalk the Cardinals have experienced the past three seasons.
After triple-digit victory margins over the runners-up from 2015 to 2017, Greenwich compiled 454 points Saturday to 439 for second-place Cheshire. The 15-point differential was the Cardinals' narrowest margin of victory in 19 Open championships; the closest race prior to this year was in 2010, when runner-up New Canaan finished 35.5 points behind.
Sophomore Meghan Lynch paced the winning effort with victories in the 200 individual medley, where she broke her own State Open record set a year ago, and 100 breaststroke. She also was part of the victorious 400 freestyle relay team, along with Jenna Handali, Emily Warner and Hannah Seward.

Tylor Mathieu of RHAM and Sophie Murphy of Cheshire each prevailed in two individual events.
