Greenwich High School Holds Athletic Signing Day Event

GREENWICH, CT — Sitting at a table adorned with Cardinal red inside the Greenwich High School gymnasium Wednesday morning, five seniors put pen to paper to officially take the next steps in their athletic careers.

Alexandra Aravides will head to Boston University for crew next fall; Ryan Jedlicka will play football at Bucknell University; Ashton Monteiro will play squash at Bates College; Ashley Torres-Brown is going to play rugby at Quinnipiac University; and Maxime Touzot will play water polo at Bucknell.

Interim GHS Athletic Director Peter Georgiou said he's proud of all the hard work the student-athletes have put in over the years.

"We're sad to see them go, but we're proud of where they're going. They have a good destination," he said. "I know they're making their families proud and they're making our school proud."

Georgiou first met Aravides and Torres-Brown when he taught them in sixth grade.

"Having them in middle school, seeing them in sixth grade and how they've matured in high school and where they are now, they've all come a long way," he added.

Touzot said he's excited to take the next step with water polo.

"It's a great day to have. My mom can come out and watch me sign. She knows I love this sport so much, and it's such a great accomplishment," Touzot said. "I think I'm ready. I'm excited for summer to come for pre-season. I've been working pretty much almost my whole life for this, and it's going to be a great experience."

Jedlicka will be a long snapper at Bucknell, and said he can't wait to get to school in the summer.

"It's just awesome to have my family here and get some recognition," Jedlicka said, noting that he'll miss practices and being with his teammates and coaches at GHS.

During the signing day event, GHS Principal Ralph Mayo stopped by the gymnasium to congratulate the student-athletes.

"Playing at the level these kids play at is not easy. They're practicing, they're working out, then they have to go home and get their school work done," Mayo said afterwards. "They've shown a singular devotion to their sport, and I find that to be so amazing for these kids. It's a great example for their peers."
