Greenwich Hospital Doctors Test Positive For Coronavirus: Report

Around nine doctors at Greenwich Hospital have tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to a new report.

GREENWICH, CT — Around nine doctors have tested positive for the new coronavirus as of Monday, March 30, according to the Greenwich Time. That number was announced by Marna Borgstrom, president and CEO of the Yale New Haven Health System, during a press conference with Gov. Ned Lamont on Monday.

According to the Greenwich Time, Borgstrom noted the number included emergency room physicians. She also said the hospital network was "working really hard" to protect physicians, nurses and other staff members at their hospitals.

When reached for a comment Tuesday, Greenwich Hospital officials said they were unable to confirm that figure as "the numbers change daily," but noted staffing has not been an issue. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

"Given the current situation, healthcare workers inevitably will get sick, despite taking all appropriate precautions," Greenwich Hospital COO Diane Kelly said in an email to Patch. "But they are being tested quickly, sent home to recover and then returning to work when they are cleared by our Occupational Health staff. We are experiencing no staffing issues as we have other physicians and clinicians who have filled any gaps thanks to our relationship with the health system. We continue to monitor staffing on a daily basis to ensure that we are fully staffed."

During a press update late Monday afternoon, First Selectman Fred Camillo said there were 90 patients who tested positive for the virus, also referred to as COVID-19, in Greenwich Hospital and were being treated in several different units as of noon on Monday, March 30.

That number reflects both patients who live in Greenwich and patients from other municipalities in Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y., as the hospital draws in residents from a number of different areas.

Also as of Monday afternoon, there have been 41 patients discharged from the hospital after treatment for the virus, Camillo said.

As of 2:30 p.m. on Monday, 113 Greenwich residents have tested positive for the virus, according to the town's health director, Caroline Baisley. The number is expected to be updated late Tuesday afternoon.

COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that's a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past.
