Greenwich Obituary: Ralph R. Longo Jr., Construction Contractor

Ralph R. Longo Jr. of Old Greenwich and South Palm Beach, FL passed away at the age of 77 from a brief illness at Greenwich Hospital.

Born May 21, 1935 in the Chickahominy section of Greenwich, he was a son of Ralph Longo Sr. and Josephine Chiappetta Longo.

He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1953, where he attended the senior prom with his future wife of 54 years. After high school, he went into the family business, which he took over and ran at the young age of 21. He left his knowledge and skills in construction all over Greenwich.

He was the president of Ralph Longo Construction Corp. and its predecessor Ralph Longo & Sons. He was involved in the early days of building the town of Greenwich. He worked tirelessly building roads, houses, office buildings, condos etc. He was involved in numerous real estate projects in Greenwich and Stamford. He was also an original partner of Acura of Westchester.

Hard work was his life, he always loved to pitch in and help when we needed him. His family said, "We always came to Poppy when something had to be fixed. He never quit or had time for quitters. He would always admire someone who gave there all for any cause whether it be work, athletics or any aspect of life. Poppy always made time to attend all of his children's and grandchildren's sporting, school, and social events."

He also sponsored women's softball, men's softball and basketball teams in town.

Mr. Long and his wife were on a lifelong journey to find the best restaurant. His eating partners and best friends for over 35 years were Marilyn and Pat Pulitano, whom he loved. We will always save a place for you and miss you at our Sunday family dinners.

He is survived by his wife Barbara (Vizzo); his daughter Valerie Conlon and her husband Ralph, his son Ralph III and his wife Gina, and his six grandchildren— Erin, Tommy and Brian Conlon, and Ralph IV, Nic, and Michael Longo. He also is survived by his sister Connie and husband Joe Caputo, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Longo was predeceased by his brothers Pat and John, and sister Millie.

The family thanks Dr. James Burnetti for everything he has done. We would also like to thank, Dr. Sung Lee, and all the nurses and staff at the Oncology Department at Greenwich Hospital.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 29 at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greenwich.
