Greenwich Parks & Rec Releases Spring 2018 Youth Sports Info

Pickleball

The Department of Parks and Recreation has extended the dates for adult pickleball at The Eastern Greenwich Civic Center through June 2018. Registration for the spring season opens on Monday, January 29. The adult pickleball program offers players a selection of up to 3 days per week at a multi-day discounted rate. Seniors will receive an additional discount with their senior card. Players that are looking to play occasionally may drop-in if space is available at a daily rate of $5.00. The spring season runs from March until the beginning of July.

Three regulation sized courts at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center gymnasium will be available for players on Tuesday’s from 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM, Wednesday’s from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM and Thursday’s from 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM.

Registration opens online starting Monday, January 29. Online registration is only available to Greenwich residents. To register online go to www.greenwichct.org/webtrac and select “Activity Registration.” Mail-in registration to the Parks and Recreation Office begins Monday, February 12. Applications should not be postmarked earlier than February 12. In-person registration at the Parks and Recreation Office opens on Monday, February 26. Non-residents may sign-up starting Monday, February 26. Registration remains open until the program is filled. Space is limited and registration is first come, first serve. Residents must provide updated proofs of residency if not yet provided this year.

Baseball (Small Fry II & Junior Baseball Leagues)

Greenwich Recreation announces that registration for the Small Fry II and Junior Baseball Leagues opens January 29 online. Online registration is only available to Greenwich residents. To register online go to www.greenwichct.org/webtrac and select “Activity Registration.” Mail-in registration will be open starting Monday, February 12 followed by in-person at the Parks and Recreation Office starting Monday, February 26.

Non-residents may register starting Monday, February 26. Registration closes on Friday, March 16 or when the program has filled.

The Small Fry II League is an instructional league for 7 year olds. Coach-pitching and instruction throughout game play is incorporated for continued learning. Participants must be 7 years old on or before April 30, 2018. Six year olds not turning 7 on or before April 30, 2018 must register for the Small Fry I League. The Junior Baseball League is for 8 and 9 year olds. Combined player and coach pitching as well as instruction during game play will be incorporated for continued learning. Participants must be 8 years old on or before April 30, 2018 and must not be 10 years old on or before April 30, 2018.

Both leagues begin on April 14 (weather depending) and end around June 16. The first couple of weeks will consist of practice. Games begin the end of April/early May and will be played mainly on Saturday mornings at various fields in Town, including Glenville School, North Street, and Loughlin Avenue. Softball (Juniors)

Greenwich Recreation announces that registration for the Junior Softball League opens online Monday, January 29. Online registration is only available for Greenwich residents. Junior softball is designed for beginners, ages 7 & 8, to teach them the fundamentals of softball. Among teammates of their own age, players will learn the basic skills of the game, including throwing, catching, and hitting. This is a coach-pitch league and special rules and equipment are applied for the development and welfare of this young age group.

Junior softball starts the weekend of April 21 and ends no later than June 16. The teams meet on Saturday mornings for a combined practice session followed by a game. Additional practices during the week may be scheduled at the discretion of the coaches. Girls Softball

Greenwich Recreation announces that registration for the girls’ softball league opens on Monday, January 29. The Town of Greenwich girls’ softball league is offered to players ages 9 – 14 and is organized into two playing divisions with the opportunity to compete on a Babe Ruth “official rules” team. Registration will be open on Monday, January 29 online for Greenwich residents only at www.greenwichct.org/webtrac. Mail-in registration will be accepted starting Monday, February 12 followed by in-person at the Parks and Recreation Office starting Monday, February 26. Non-residents may register starting Monday, February 26. Registration closes Friday, March 16 or when the program has filled; space is limited

The emphasis of the league is on education, skill development, and participation for all players. Teams will have scheduled games in both their division and with other local recreational leagues. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to play on an “official rules” Babe Ruth team if there is enough interest and commitment.

The spring season starts April 14 with outdoor practices. Games begin the end of April/early May and are mainly played on the weekends with occasional weeknights. The spring season ends no later than June 23 (with built-in rain-outs). Participants on an official rules team/travel will continue play after June 16.

Mighty Mites Spring Soccer

Greenwich Recreation announces that registration for spring Mighty Mites Soccer opens Monday, February 12! Mighty Mites is co-ed for ages 3 – 9 years and focuses on the fundamentals of soccer including passing, dribbling, trapping and shooting through drills and small-sided games. Participants must be age 3 prior to the start of the program on April 21, 2018. Mighty Mites will take place on Saturdays from April 21 until June 9 at Havemeyer Fields located behind Town Hall. Volunteer team coaches are needed for teams. Interested volunteers can sign-up to coach while registering.

Soccer (Clinics)

Greenwich Parks & Recreation has partnered with Soccer Extreme to offer youth soccer instruction for this spring. Spring clinics will be held on Mondays and Fridays for ages 4 through 12, beginning the week of April 16. Ages 4-5 play from 4:00 to 5:00 PM and ages 6-8 and 9-12 play from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. A Saturday clinic will be held for ages 9-12 from 12:30 to 2:00 PM, beginning April 22. All sessions are held at Loughlin Avenue Field located in Cos Cob.
