Greenwich Police Chief Elected President Of CT Police Chiefs Association

The CPCA is a statewide professional organization that represents police chiefs and law enforcement executives throughout CT.

GREENWICH, CT — One of Greenwich's own will now lead the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association (CPCA).

Greenwich Police Chief James Heavey was recently elected during the annual CPCA meeting.

The CPCA is a statewide professional organization that represents police chiefs and law enforcement executives throughout Connecticut. The organization is dedicated to enhancing public safety, advancing the law enforcement profession, promoting professional development, and fostering collaboration among police agencies across CT.

The CPCA works closely with local, state, and federal partners on public safety, training, legislation, and best practices in policing.

Heavey has served as Greenwich's chief of police since November 2011 after a three-decade career with the department that began as a dispatcher in 1981 and included promotions through the ranks to deputy chief.

A lifelong Greenwich resident, Heavey holds degrees in criminal justice and public administration, along with graduate certificates in law enforcement education and emergency management, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

He also served more than 20 years as a military police officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, including a deployment during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Outside of law enforcement, Heavey has volunteered extensively with organizations including the American Red Cross, the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company and Scouting America, and received the American Red Cross Lifetime Service Award in 2024.

First Selectman Fred Camillo congratulated Heavey in his recent community newsletter.

"Chief Heavey sets the tone for the department and as a Greenwich native, volunteer fireman and veteran, we are lucky to have him," said Camillo, who attended Heavey's swearing-in to the leadership role last week. "I wish him a lot of success as he begins his term as the association’s president."
