Greenwich Police Department Mourns Death Of Retired Lieutenant

Retired Lt. William Hamilton died recently at the age of 87, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is mourning the death of retired Lt. William Hamilton, who died recently at the age of 87.

Hamilton started his 21-year career with the GPD on June 18, 1959, and retired on Aug. 1, 1980, the department said in an announcement.

Hamilton was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on June 26, 1935, and attended schools in New York. Before becoming a Greenwich police officer, he served in the U.S. Army from May 21, 1956, to May 8, 1959, the GPD said.

During his career in Greenwich, Hamilton served in the patrol and traffic divisions and was a member of the accident squad. On May 13, 1972, he was assigned to the youth division. On Aug. 9, 1973, he was promoted to sergeant, and on April 11, 1975, he was promoted to lieutenant, according to the GPD.

On Sept. 8, 1968, Hamilton was awarded the Dr. John Clarke Award for his exceptional bravery when arresting an escaped prisoner from Maine. During the arrest, Hamilton was shot by the escapee but still made the arrest and brought the person into custody, the GPD said.

Hamilton also received numerous citations for outstanding police work and many "thank-you" letters from grateful citizens.

"We join all members of the Department in extending our sincere sympathy to the Hamilton family," the GPD said.
