Greenwich Police Department Mourns Loss Of Retired Detective
David Hughes started his 24-year career with the Greenwich Police Department on Aug. 1, 1960.
GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department announced on Facebook that retired police Det. David Hughes died recently at the age of 84.
"We join all members of the department in extending our sincere sympathy to the Hughes family," the GPD said in their announcement.

Hughes started his 24-year career with the GPD on Aug. 1, 1960 and retired on Aug. 1, 1984. He was born on June 22, 1938, and raised in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Prior to becoming a Greenwich police officer, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1958 until 1960.

During his career, Hughes served in the patrol division and was appointed to detective on May 1, 1971, the GPD said.
He received the John Clarke Award in 1972 for helping to apprehend two fugitive escapees from the Arizona State Prison who had taken two Arizona officers hostage, the GPD said.
Hughes also received numerous citations for exceptional police work and received many "thank you" letters from residents.
