Greenwich Police Mourn Death Of Retired Captain

"Throughout his career, he exemplified professionalism, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service," the department said.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is mourning the death of retired Capt. Donald E. Merchant, who served in town for more than 30 years. He was 84.

Merchant began his career with the GPD on Aug. 18, 1969, and served until his retirement in July 1999, the department said in a social media post.

"Throughout his career, he exemplified professionalism, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service," the department noted.

Merchant was a lifelong Greenwich resident who was born on June 6, 1942. He joined the United States Air Force in 1961 and served through August 1964 before beginning his career in law enforcement.

During his career in Greenwich, Merchant had several key roles, including patrol officer and promotions to juvenile officer in 1977, sergeant in 1980, lieutenant in 1982 and captain in 1986.

In 1993, the GPD noted, Merchant graduated from the 173rd session of the FBI National Academy, "a prestigious achievement that reflects his commitment to professional excellence."

"Captain Merchant was widely respected by his colleagues and the community he served," the GPD added. "Throughout his career, he received numerous letters of appreciation recognizing his compassion, kindness, and willingness to help others. His legacy of service will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps."

Visitation for Merchant will be held on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., in Greenwich.

A funeral Mass will take place on Monday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Ave., in Riverside.

"The members of the Greenwich Police Department extend their deepest condolences to the Merchant family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing Captain Merchant," the GPD concluded. "His decades of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to the Greenwich community will be remembered with gratitude and respect."
