Greenwich Readies For Tuesday's Special Election

GREENWICH, CT — With the special election for the vacant 36th District State Senate seat slated for Tuesday, Greenwich is making final preparations as residents get ready to hit the polls.

Similar COVID-19 protocols from last fall's election will be in place at polling places on Tuesday, according to Fred DeCaro, the Republican Registrar of Voters.

"We will have all poll workers wearing masks, we'll be supplying hand sanitizer, and we'll have acrylic shields and social distance between the poll workers and the voters, very similar to November. We're taking almost all the same precautions," DeCaro said on Monday, adding that all voters are encouraged to wear masks.

DeCaro said that the turnout for special elections in Greenwich usually ranges between nine and 30 percent, but with the enhanced rules for absentee ballots due to COVID-19, DeCaro said turnout could bump up to 35 percent.

The race for the seat features three candidates, all Greenwich residents: Ryan Fazio (Republican), Alexis Gevanter(Democrat), and John Blankley (unaffiliated). Alex Kasser, a Democrat, suddenly resigned from the post in June. The seat covers all of Greenwich and a portion of Stamford and New Canaan. Kasser was first elected in 2018, and won re-election in 2020.

Polling locations in Greenwich are as follows. *Note that registered voters in District 7 will NOT be voting at Greenwich High School. Instead, they will vote in the cafeteria at Central Middle School. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• District 12 - North Mianus School

Absentee ballots must be in the hands of Town Clerk Carmella Budkins by the end of day on Tuesday. Residents can drop off their ballots at one of three ballot boxes in town by 4 p.m.: Town Hall lobby, near the Town Hall parking lot, and inside the atrium at the Greenwich Police Department at 11 Bruce Pl.

Budkins told Patch that as of Monday morning, Greenwich had issued a total of 3,648 absentee ballots, and received 3,022.
