Greenwich Rolls To Class LL Football Championship Over Fairfield Prep

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Greenwich scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and never looked back, rolling to a 37-17 win over Fairfield Prep in the CIAC Class LL football championship game Saturday at Rentschler Field.

The Cardinals tallied three touchdowns in a 6-minute span of the opening quarter, beginning with a 33-yard interception return by Charlie Dixon. Greenwich recovered a fumble at the Jesuit 27, and three plays later, George Vomvolakis ran in from 5 yards out. Quarterback Jack Wilson scored on a 1-yard run to put Greenwich in front, 20-0.

In the second quarter, Wilson scored on another 1-yard keeper to make it 27-0. Fairfield Prep finally broke through on a 24-yard scoring pass from Tyler Smith to Ryan Preisano, sending the teams to the locker room at halftime with Greenwich in possession of a 27-7 advantage.

Sergot Boone booted a 31-yard field goal late in the third quarter, then Vomvolakis exploded for a 63-yard scoring jaunt early in the fourth quarter to make it 37-7.

A 13-yard touchdown run by Malachi Mercer-Robinson and a safety closed out the scoring for Fairfield Prep in the final period.

Greenwich, seeded second, scored 126 points in three playoff games, while allowing just 24.

The Cardinals won their ninth state championship, but first since 2018. The fifth-seeded Jesuits were in search of their first state title since 1988.
