Greenwich's First-Ever Indian Contemporary Art Exhibit

The event is hosted by the India Cultural Center of Greenwich and the Greenwich Arts Council.

  • Local artists from Fairfield and Westchester counties will be exhibiting original works.
  • Kathryn Myers, University of Connecticut Professor and Fulbright Scholar, to give opening lecture and loan renowned works to the exhibit.
  • Exhibit is part of ICC’s “Discover” series, which explores the cinematic, culinary, literary, performing and visual arts of the Indian subcontinent.

WHEN:

  • Exhibit will run from Tuesday, February 12, 2019 through Tuesday, February 22, 2019 (6:30pm – 9:00pm)
  • Opening reception and lecture will take place on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 (6:30pm – 9:00pm)

• Local artists exhibiting include:
Meera Agarwal (Rye) – Artist, Teacher & Community Volunteer Previously a high-tech public relations specialist in Silicon Valley, Meera is pursuing a second career as a visual artist and art teacher. She volunteers with local non-profits like the Carver Center (Port Chester, NY) and Big Picture Foundation (BPF). An Indian cinephile, she serves on the Discover Indian Cinema advisory board of India Cultural Center of Greenwich, CT. Meera holds a bachelor’s degree in management studies from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan (India), and a master’s degree in corporate and public communications from Seton Hall University, New Jersey.

Pratibha Garewal (Mount Kisco): A CPA by profession, New York-based, Indian-born Pratibha turned to art after having a brain tumor removed in 1999. Of the experience, she said, “I decided to take a change of pace and indulge my artistic urges more. Since then, I spend most of each day painting and being inspired by nature.” Pratibha's primary medium consists of watercolors, but she has created several multimedia pieces, having forayed into the work of acrylics and alcohol inks. She consistently exhibits at art shows in Westport, Connecticut and Lyndhurst, New York as well as at Art to the Avenue in Greenwich, Connecticut and the Northern Westchester Artist’s Guild in Chappaqua, New York. Her paintings have hung on display in the Katonah Museum, the Northern Westchester Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital for several years.

Prachi Khade-Gurjar (Stamford) – Architect & Landscape Designer, Indian Tribal Art An architect by profession, Prachi’s interests lie largely in the various aspects of design, aesthetics and everything related. Since early childhood, she has been fortunate to live in beautiful cities around the world. This has helped her appreciate and get a close look at various rich cultures. The cultural heritage and art forms of India have fascinated her greatly. Madhu Mathur (Greenwich) – Artist & Physician Madhu grew up in India, painting in her teens and continuing to paint as a medical student and a pediatrician. She came to the U.S. in 1997 and has lived in Greenwich since 2002. Madhu paints exclusively in oil. Although she started with landscapes, her interest has increasingly moved towards abstract expressionism. She has exhibited for the past eight years, and has donated paintings to benefit the community. She is a member of the Art Society of Old

Greenwich (ASOG) and has co-chaired the Children’s Art Show for many years. She loves working with children and has created public health programs to address childhood obesity. Madhu was one of the first in Connecticut to become board certified in obesity medicine. Her practice in Stamford is devoted to using lifestyle medicine and cutting-edge science to address problems like diabetes, weight and nutrition issues. She has received numerous honors and awards for her public health work, including the BRAVA Award from the Greenwich YWCA as well as community service awards from the DPH, Connecticut Hospitals Association and Junior League.

• Professor Kathryn Myers will be loaning the works of the following artists to the exhibit: Mahalaxmi Karn, Santosh Kumar Das, Rani Jha and Naresh Kumar Paswan.
