Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued for Connecticut

Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding are possible today. We'll let you know when the forecast is expected to take a bad turn.

The National Weather Service has issued "Hazardous Weather Outlook" warnings for Connecticut due to predicted thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Showers and thunderstorms could produce heavy rain with a maximum hourly rainfall rates approaching one inch per hour in New Haven, New London and Fairfield counties.

The potential for strong to severe thunderstorms is mainly in the afternoon and evening.

Flash flooding could be possible in low lying areas with poor drainage.

In northern Connecticut widespread bands of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening. Some locations may see rainfall approaching one inch per hour as well.

The forecast for southern Connecticut :

Today A slight chance of showers, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 10am. High near 70. Southeast wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tonight Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers between midnight and 3am. Low around 63. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. West wind around 11 mph.

Monday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 65. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph.

The forecast for northern Connecticut:

Today Rain. High near 73. Southeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tonight Rain and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog between 7pm and 8pm. Low around 65. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph.

Monday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 64. South wind 5 to 8 mph.
