Connecticut Weather Forecast: Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued

One Connecticut meteorologist said the Tuesday morning commute is shaping up to be a "real nightmare." Here's why.

Connecticut received its first accumulating snow of the year Saturday and more advisories and weather statements have already been issued. The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the entire state. A Special Weather Statement has also been issued for all of southern Connecticut.

For southern Connecticut, the National Weather Service issued both a Special Weather Statement and Hazardous Weather Outlook for a slippery Monday morning commute.

“Snow has melted and is expected to refreeze tonight across the tri-state area. This will cause slippery conditions on untreated surfaces tonight into Monday morning. Black ice is expected tonight into Monday morning as any standing water and slush refreezes.”

The National Weather Service’s Hazardous Weather Outlook for Hartford and Tolland counties is for the possibility of accumulating snow late Monday night into Tuesday. It’s uncertain how much snow may accumulate here, but the weather service cautions that the Tuesday morning rush hour “will be impacted to some degree. There may also be a bit of ice mixed in as well.” Some rain may also mix in too.

No advisories have been issued as of yet for snow Tuesday for southern Connecticut but even here it appears that inland areas will see some snow too. Areas along the immediate coast may see some snowflakes mixed with rain before a changeover to plain rain Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service’s preliminary accumulation map shows less than an inch on the coast Tuesday, and a couple of inches for inland and northern sections of the state. Litchfield County could see the most snow Tuesday, which would be 3 to 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Darren Sweeney said, “We have issued a first alert for another round of a wintry mix on Tuesday. Details are still to be worked out but snow, sleet, frz rain and rain are likely around the AM commute.”

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Kevin Arnone said, “Can't rule out a few snow showers early Monday morning but the next wintry mess we're watching moves in early Tuesday morning.”
