GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Department of Public Works last week issued an update on the North Street Bridge replacement project and when work could possibly begin.

Following a recent coordination meeting with representatives from the grant program LOTCIP, (Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program), DPW said it "gained greater clarity on the anticipated construction timeline and next steps."

"Based on the latest schedule, construction is projected to begin in spring 2026. Utility relocations and preparatory work for the construction will continue in the coming months with minimal impacts to traffic," DPW said, noting the project "continues to advance with significant funding support from the State of Connecticut."

While the original target date for advertising the project has passed, DPW said it recently received confirmation that the final design submission has been approved by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), a "critical milestone" for the project.

DPW is now awaiting formal authorization from the state to initiate the bidding phase.

"Recognizing the importance of minimizing community impacts, DPW has emphasized to CTDOT the need to avoid overlapping detours with the upcoming Route 1 at Hillside Bridge project," DPW Said. "Both agencies are committed to working together to ensure safe, efficient travel and to proactively manage traffic flow throughout the area."

In order to reduce disruptions to local traffic and school transportation, DPW said it plans to schedule the full road closure for the project during summer 2026, "aligning with best practices for seasonal project timing."

Located on North Street over West Brothers Brook, which is between Cotswood Road and Macpherson Drive, the bridge was originally built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1950. In March of 2022, the bridge was inspected and emergency repairs were made and a 4-ton weight limit was added.

The bridge must now be replaced. Along with a new structure, new catch basins and manholes will be installed, and a portion of North Street will be repaved with new pavement markings in the area.
