Hillary Clinton Courts Connecticut Democrats

The former Secretary of State came to Greenwich for a fund-raiser on Friday.

Hillary Clinton arrived in her ‘Scooby’ van in Greenwich Friday afternoon for a private fund-raiser with about 100 of the area’s Democratic movers, shakers and fund-raisers.

The event was held at the Vista Drive home of Malcolm and Carolyn Weiner — a home that was built in 1889 on property developed by the infamous Boss Tweed, overlooking Indian Harbor. Admission was $2,700.

The former First Lady, U.S. Senator from New York and Secretary of State who’s seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, spoke for about a half-hour but did not take any questions.

According to one insider, those attending included several Greenwich pols — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, Greenwich Selectman Drew Marzullo and former Greenwich selectman Ned Lamont. Connecticut’s other Democratic senator Chris Murphy, real estate magnate and owner of the Empire State building Peter Malkin of Greenwich, comedian Jane Condon, RBC executive Francisco Gonzalez and oncologist Dr. Daniel Fass also were among the attendees, according to the insider.

Clinton discussed economic issues affecting the shrinking middle class, the importance of universal pre-kindergarten programs, making college more affordable and how to curb rising drug abuse. Clinton emphasized that the election shouldn’t focus on her specifically but rather the issues.

“She also talked of her support of affordable care act but conceded parts need improving,” the insider said.

Clinton told the crowd that she decided to run after “she kept thinking about her own mother and granddaughter Charlotte.”

And the afternoon was not without reminiscing. “She also talked about her great relationship with Obama and … about when she was senator from New York, she had a very good, respectful relationship with President Bush, especially after Sept. 11,” according to the insider.
