Looking for Activities for Teens & Tweens? From Chess, Gaming, Books and College Prep -- Greenwich Library Has It All

Come November — and starting this weekend — Greenwich Library is offering students a plethora of programs designed to get valuable advice on how to interview for college and how to complete the FAFSA, and how to relax with its weekly chess club and school book clubs.

Teens unsure about which college assessment test is best can learn how to succeed on both the ACT and the SAT. Student gamers can help celebrate at a special 5th anniversary International Games Day. The Library also offers a slew of regularly scheduled student programs including the Student Leadership Council, Friday Night Chess and Middle School Book Club, all of which meet monthly. All events are open to all at no charge unless otherwise noted.

Saturday, November 1 at 11 a.m., College Interview Workshop
College Interview Counselors (CIC) will help students learn how to have an impressive interview with college admissions representatives. This interactive workshop includes interviewing tips, mock interviews, audience critique and a discussion of revealing interviewer comments about actual candidates. No registration required. Monday, November 3 and Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m., FAFSA 101
Start planning for college costs now. This program will cover why everyone should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), what documents are required, key dates and how to improve your chance of getting aid. Open to parents and students in grades 8-12. The program on each date is identical. No registration required. Presented by Daniel Patti, CFP of Janney Montgomery Scott. Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m., Student Leadership Council Meeting
Students in grades 7-12 gather at Teen Central on the second floor to brainstorm about using library resources to initiate and execute projects relevant to their peer group in exchange for community service hours. Friday, November 7 at 7 p.m., Friday Night Chess
National Master Rich Jackson will provide instruction, supervise play and challenge students to an occasional match. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Saturday, November 8 from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m., Success on the ACT and SAT
Dr. Mark Yin of the Greenwich Tutor Center and former high-school English teacher Ms. Anna Warm will present an information session on these standard college entrance exams, including how to prepare and how to get the best scores possible. Saturday, November 15 from 1:30-4:30 p.m., International Games Day
Celebrate our 5th annual International Games Day with a Candy Crush competition. Come show off your skills for a chance to win a prize and enter our raffle for another chance to win. There will be video games, board games and LEGOS available for the entire family. Snacks and refreshments will be served. Thursday, November 20 at 4:30 p.m., Middle School Book Club
Middle School Book Club is for literature fans in grades 6-8. This month’s book is Insignia by S.J. Kincaid. In this story, Tom, a fourteen-year-old genius at virtual reality games, is recruited by the United States Military to begin training at the Pentagon Spire as a Combatant in World War III, controlling the mechanized drones that do the actual fighting off-planet.
