LWV Greenwich To Host Candidate Debates Ahead Of Election

Residents are encouraged to attend or watch the upcoming candidate debates. Here are the details.

GREENWICH, CT — The League of Women Voters of Greenwich is encouraging voters to attend or watch four upcoming candidate debates to hear from those seeking office and learn about issues affecting Connecticut voters.

The league will host a debate for state Senate and House candidates Oct. 14 at First Congregational Church of Greenwich in Old Greenwich. It also will join 11 other Lower Fairfield County Leagues of Women Voters to host a debate for candidates for Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District on Oct. 19 at Westport Library.

Two gubernatorial debates, presented independently by Connecticut media and municipal organizations, are scheduled for Oct. 22 and Oct. 27.

"Candidate debates provide an important opportunity for voters to hear candidates address issues and respond to questions directly," said Mary Browne, president of the League of Women Voters of Greenwich, in an announcement. "Our goal is to help voters become informed and engaged so they can participate fully in the election. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about the candidates and make a plan to vote."

The Oct. 14 event will begin at 7 p.m. with a debate between 36th District state Senate candidates Jill Oberlander (D) and Joe Kelly (R, I). That debate will run until 7:45 p.m.

The state House debate will follow from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring candidates from Greenwich’s three House districts: Amiel Goldberg (D) and incumbent Tina Courpas (R, I) in the 149th District; incumbent Steve Meskers (D) and Jonathan Charles Goldstein (R) in the 150th District; and incumbent Hector Arzeno (D, I) and Michael S. Mason (R) in the 151st District.

Anthony Presta, a social studies teacher and mock trial coach at Wilton High School, will moderate, assisted by a local high school student. Voters may attend in person and submit questions in advance when registering. Greenwich Community Television will livestream the debate, which will also be available on GCTV’s YouTube channel.

The Oct. 19 debate for Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District will begin at 7 p.m. at Westport Library and feature Jim Himes (D), Michael Ted Goldstein (R) and Benjamin Wesley (I). Kay Maxwell, former president of the League of Women Voters of the United States, will moderate.

The debate will be held before a live audience and streamed online. District residents may submit questions through the registration form or by emailing LWVCongress4Debate@gmail.com by Oct. 12.

The two gubernatorial debates are not sponsored or organized by the Greenwich league.

The first is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, presented by WFSB and CT Insider. It will be broadcast live on WFSB Channel 3 and streamed through WFSB+. Debate information and livestream details are available online.

The second is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, presented by the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and WTNH News 8 as part of the 2026 CCM Convention at Mohegan Sun. It will air live on WTNH. A WTNH livestream is available online.

The Greenwich league’s Voters’ Guide, containing election information and candidate responses to questions about key issues, will be published in mid-October. Information will also appear on Vote411.org, a website hosted by the national League of Women Voters.
