Mail Thieves Found With Over 300 Checks In Greenwich: PD

GREENWICH, CT — Two New York men accused of stealing mail in Greenwich were found with over 300 checks from more than 200 people on Thursday. A resident on Owenoke Way in the Riverside area of town told officers she saw two people remove mail containing checks from her mailbox around 11 a.m.

Officers found a vehicle that matched the resident's description, police said. Officers stopped the vehicle and found two men who were in possession of 368 personal checks from over 200 people in both Fairfield and Westchester County, as well as New York City, police said.

Small amounts of marijuana, illegal prescription drugs, fake IDs and fraudulent credit cards were also found in the men's possession, police said.

"Greenwich Police detectives are following up with the police agencies from other jurisdictions, and are also coordinating with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service," police said in a statement.

Mark Claudio, 23, and Dondre Waugh, 27, both of Bronx, N.Y., were charged with criminal attempt at identity theft (358 counts), sixth-degree larceny (358 counts), credit card fraud (two counts), possession of personal identifying device (two counts), unlawful production of payment card (two counts), identity theft (two counts), second-degree forgery (two counts), illegal possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of marijuana and conspiracy at third-degree identity theft (358 counts), according to police.

Claudio was also charged with operating a vehicle without a license, police said. Both men were held on a $250,000 appearance bond, which they were unable to post.
